Yellow Wallpaper

On page 4 of "The Yellow Wallpaper", the woman says, I used to lie awake as a child and get more entertainment and terroe out of blank walls and plain furniture than most children would find in a toy store." I believe these things showed both creativity and mental illness. A child who could entertain herself has amazing creative brain activity. However, no one should be truly afraid of such things. I initially thought this was foreshadowing of what was to come. However, in class we discussed how this woman went crazy. I think this started way before the reading did. She obviously had some kind of sense when she was younger that something was different about her.

I never thought her husband to be the evil one in this story, however, i can't understand why a doctor would feel the need to keep her in the house. Being cooped up inside that old house with ugly walls was enough to make her sick, so she should have been let out of the house to experience more than she was.

It's interesting that you take her creativity as a sign of a pre-existing condition. Do you think the story tries to lead us this way? That seems very much to depend upon the same assumptions that mar John's prescriptions--assumptions about what's natural, acceptable, normal for a woman - (i.e. no writing, thinking, or imagining).

It is of course a foreshadowing!
